Aravind Eye Hospital

Aravind Eye Hospital is the worlds largest eye care facility, in terms of surgical volume and number of patients treated. I first learned about Aravind and its founder, Dr. Govindappa Venkataswamy (Dr. V.), through the PBS NewsHour video that you can find below, or see the written details of NewsHour story.

Aravind is named after Sri Aurobindo, who was an inspirational figure for Dr. V. Photographs of Aurobindo are posted alongside “The Mother” throughout Aravind facilities and many of the “Aravind family” are followers of his philosophy. Dr. V. passed away in 2006 when his obituary was published in the Wall Street Journal.

The original Aravind Eye Hospital is located in Madurai, India. There are four additional hospital buildings in Tamil Nadu as well as many regional clinics. In 2008 Aravind Eye Hospital won the Gates Award for Global Health, a $1 million award for their leadership in eye care for the developing world. See the link to the city of Madurai on the sidebar for more information about Madurai or India in general.

Guidance for my project was provided by my mentor at the Aravind Medical Research Foundation, Dr. V.R. Muthukkaruppan. For more details about my research progject see the “Contact and Backround Information” tab at the top of this page or do a search through my blog entries.

The video below an exerpt from “Infinite Vision,” a moving documentary about Aravind and the life of Dr. V.
